If It Makes You Happy
I have been seeing this book getting lots of love on social media so I was excited to try it. It takes place in 1997 in a small town in Vermont. It was lighthearted, cozy, funny, and a perfect fall romance.
Michelle has put her city life on hold to come run her parents’ B&B in the small town of Copper Run, Vermont. Her mother recently passed away from cancer and her dad isn’t ready to return. Michelle steps in to run Bird & Breakfast for three months until her sister, Sara, is done with school and can take over.
Michelle is newly divorced and brings Rocket, her border collie, along with her. When they arrive, Rocket immediately makes friends with the little girl who lives next door. Her dad comes out to say hi and the fun begins.
Cliff is joyful and full of smirks, jokes and I loved his funny banter. He’s a single dad to six-year-old Brittany and sixteen-year-old Emily. He is a baker and runs Burke’s Bakery in town with his sister. He offers to help Michelle get settled with the B&B because he used to help out her mom, but she tells him she doesn’t need help, she’ll be fine. She comes off a little stern and while she’s super-efficient, she’s not a people person and is struggling to adjust. Her morning biscuits are pretty awful too.
Her mom put her heart and soul into the place and Michelle doesn’t want to fail. She ends up asking Cliff to show her how to be friendly and hospitable to guests.
Cliff brings her bakery goods that sound so delicious and gives her baking lessons for sweet rolls. He thinks she’s beautiful and smells like coffee cake. She thinks he’s hot and smells like cinnamon and butter, and there are a few spicy scenes.
There’s some drama with his ex and with Emily and her boyfriend. Michelle has her job and city life waiting for her so she and Cliff have some hurdles to get through. But there’s so much fun on the way. I enjoyed the small-town secondary characters that come to help Michelle out and the Harvest Festival. Rocket steals the show in places and I enjoyed the chapter near the end from his viewpoint.
I recommend this for readers looking for a fall, cozy, small town romance. I see the author has a new book that just came out, Love Felt Like This, and I look forward to reading that soon!
